What makes CrossFit Warrington different ?

What makes CrossFit Warrington different from other functional fitness gyms in the area? One word: Inclusivity.
It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot. But at CrossFit Warrington, inclusivity isn’t a tagline — it’s the heartbeat of everything we do. And nothing captures that better than the story of Rachel Riley-Birkett.
Meet Rachel Riley-Birkett
Rachel is 36 years old, and she’s the reason we launched Couch to CrossFit in 2023.
She’s also a family friend. One evening, while we were cooking dinner, we were reliving a conversation we had. Rachel had said something simple but powerful:
“I wish there was a class for me.”
At first, I thought: But we already have that class — it’s called CrossFit.
But that was naïve of me.
What Rachel meant wasn’t about the class itself. It was about the barrier of even stepping into a gym. For her, walking through unfamiliar doors filled her with anxiety. The thought of being watched, judged, or standing out made fitness feel inaccessible.
So we listened. And we created Couch to CrossFit — a six-week programme designed to take people from their sofa to the confidence of joining a CrossFit class.
Building Confidence, Step by Step
Rachel showed up. She tried everything we put in front of her. Week by week, she grew stronger — not just in fitness, but in confidence. She even felt comfortable enough to rope her husband into joining her… and a few friends too.
By the end of the programme, something incredible happened. We invited some of our regular CrossFit members to come along to a session. That’s when it all clicked for Rachel.
She realised that Couch to CrossFit wasn’t some “separate” class for beginners. It was CrossFit. The same workouts, the same spirit — just adapted to where she (and others) were starting from.
She looked around and saw that our community is full of people of all shapes, sizes, ages, and abilities. Everyone working side by side, pushing themselves at their own level. And that’s when the penny dropped: she belonged here.
Small Wins, Big Confidence
When I think back on Rachel’s first few months, one of the most special moments was the day she did her first burpee. Something she never thought she’d be able to do.
Then there was the paddleboarding trip she said yes to — a highlight for her, but also a turning point. On the surface, it might just look like a fun activity. But to me, it symbolised something bigger: Rachel had built the confidence to try new things. That same confidence started in the gym, where she discovered that she could do more than she thought possible.
A Lesson for All of Us
Rachel’s journey wasn’t just a breakthrough for her. It was a huge learning curve for me as a coach, too. It made me realise that when we say we’re inclusive, we have to mean it. We can’t just assume people feel welcome — we have to create the structures, the classes, and the environment that makes them feel it.
And Rachel reminded me that inclusivity doesn’t just change fitness journeys. It changes lives.
Why We’re Different
At CrossFit Warrington, inclusivity means:
- Creating a safe space where nobody feels watched, judged, or left out.
- Meeting people where they are, whether that’s the couch, the recovery room, or the competition floor.
- Offering pathways for every age and stage: from tots and kids, to adults, adaptive athletes, sports teams, and even CrossFit Games semifinalists.
- Having coaches who adapt workouts not just to fitness levels, but also to injuries, mindset, and even headspace on any given day.
More Than a Gym — A Community
I’m proud of everyone who has ever joined Couch to CrossFit. But I’m especially proud of Rachel Riley-Birkett. She didn’t just find her way into fitness — she helped us build a stronger, more inclusive community in the process.
Because here at CrossFit Warrington, it isn’t about fitting in.
It’s about finding a place where you truly belong.
