What Accessories Do I Need for CrossFit Warrington?
By Sian Edwards, Owner

One of the most common questions we hear from new members at CrossFit Warrington is, “What accessories do I need for CrossFit?” If you’ve just joined and you’re noticing other members with ropes, grips, sleeves and lifting belts, it’s completely normal to wonder if you should be buying the same things. The good news is that when you’re starting out at CFW, you need very little. In fact, the most important thing you can bring with you isn’t something you can order online.
For your very first CrossFit Warrington class, all you really need is comfortable workout clothes, a decent pair of trainers, a water bottle and a good attitude. That’s it. All the equipment you’ll use in class — barbells, plates, kettlebells, dumbbells, boxes and skipping ropes — is provided. You don’t need to invest in lots of kit before you’ve even learned the basics. As CrossFit Warrington owner Sian Edwards says, “The only thing you truly need when you start is an open mind and a willingness to learn. Accessories are optional. Effort and consistency are not.” Turning up ready to listen, move well and improve will take you much further than any accessory ever could.
A common question we get is about skipping ropes. Do you need your own? No. We provide ropes at CrossFit Warrington, so there’s no pressure to buy one straight away. As you develop your double-unders, you may find you prefer a certain handle style, cable thickness or rope length. When that time comes, choosing an adjustable rope is sensible so you can fine-tune the length. Just don’t rush to cut it shorter until you’ve tested it in a few sessions.
Gymnastics grips are another popular accessory. They can be helpful for movements like pull-ups and toes-to-bar, particularly when volume increases. However, if you’re new, we recommend building natural grip strength first. There is real value in training bare-handed while you develop strict strength and improve your technique. Grip strength carries over into many other movements, including deadlifts and kettlebell swings. Grips are best viewed as a tool to help manage volume and protect your hands once you’re performing higher-rep or kipping movements, not as a shortcut to better gymnastics.
Knee sleeves are often seen as essential, but unless you’ve been advised by a medical professional, they’re rarely necessary. They keep the knees warm and can provide compression, but they are not a solution to pain. If you feel you can’t train without them, it may indicate a mobility restriction, strength imbalance or movement pattern that needs addressing. Our preference is always to fix the root cause rather than rely on supportive equipment long term.
Shoes are probably the one item worth thinking about early on. Ideally, choose trainers that are comfortable, fairly flat and stable. Very soft, highly cushioned running shoes aren’t ideal for lifting as they reduce stability under load. You want something that keeps your foot secure and doesn’t roll easily side to side. And please make sure they’re clean — you’ll be doing burpees and press-ups on the same floor you’re standing on.
You’ll see plenty of kit around the gym, and yes, CrossFitters do enjoy their accessories. But fancy gear doesn’t replace good movement, solid coaching, consistency or a positive mindset. If you’re just starting your journey at CrossFit Warrington, focus on learning the fundamentals, showing up regularly and trusting the process. Over time, you’ll naturally discover which accessories genuinely support your training. Until then, keep it simple and bring your effort — that’s what really makes the difference.
