Summer, Sweat and Your Performance: Why Hydration is Your Best Training Partner

Summer is officially here. The warmer weather brings longer days, more time outdoors and, for us at CrossFit Warrington, some seriously intense training sessions. While we all love the energy of a summer workout, it’s the time of year when our bodies have to work twice as hard just to keep cool.

When you’re pushing through a WOD, your hydration levels aren't just about thirst—they’re about performance, recovery and safety.

The Science of the Sweat

It’s easy to underestimate just how much fluid we lose. When your body temperature rises, you sweat to regulate it. During a high-intensity CrossFit session, it isn't uncommon for an athlete to lose between 0.5 and 2.0 litres of fluid per hour, depending on the intensity and the humidity.

Here are a few key statistics to keep in mind:

  • The 2% Rule: A loss of just 2% of your body weight in fluids can lead to a significant decline in aerobic performance, concentration and coordination.
  • The Cooling Effect: Proper hydration is critical for cardiovascular health during exercise; it helps maintain blood volume, allowing your heart to pump oxygen to your muscles more efficiently.
  • Post-Workout Recovery: Dehydration delays the repair of muscle tissue. If you aren't rehydrating properly, you are essentially stalling your own progress.

A Message from the Owner: Sian Edwards

I see our members pushing their limits every single day, and I wanted to share a quick thought on how we can all stay on top of our game this summer:

"We all know that summer training brings a different kind of intensity. But your greatest performance advantage isn’t just your hard work—it’s how you support your body outside of the class. Hydration is the foundation of everything we do. Whether you're in the middle of a heavy lifting session or grinding through a longer conditioning piece, if you haven't fuelled your body with enough water and electrolytes, you’re training at a deficit. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink—think of hydration as part of your training plan. Look after yourselves, keep that water bottle close and let’s make the most of the summer in the box." — Sian Edwards, Owner of CrossFit Warrington

3 Simple Ways to Stay Hydrated

  1. Start Early: Don't wait until you arrive at the gym to start drinking. Start your day with a large glass of water.
  2. Add Electrolytes: When you sweat heavily, you lose more than just water. If you’re training hard, consider adding an electrolyte supplement to replace sodium, potassium and magnesium.
  3. Monitor Your Recovery: If you’re feeling sluggish, headachy, or your performance has dipped unexpectedly, check your hydration first. It’s often the simplest fix for a training plateau.

Hydration is a simple habit, but it’s one that changes everything. Stay cool, keep drinking and I'll see you on the gym floor!
