PB Day: Why We Ring the Bell

By Sian Edwards, Owner

If you've ever heard a bell ring out across the gym floor at CrossFit Warrington, you'll know exactly what it means. Someone has just hit a personal best.

Squat day landed and the bars were loaded, the coaches were on every rep, and by the end of the session the bell had had a proper workout. Here's what a PB day looks like at our place, and why it's about so much more than the number on the bar.

Push hard

Squats are one of the best things you can do for your strength, and also one of the most honest. There's nowhere to hide under a loaded bar. So when people come in, set up, take a breath and go for it, it takes real grit.

What you won't see is anyone being thrown in at the deep end. Every lift is coached. Every weight is scaled to the person lifting it. A PB for one member might be their first time with plates on the bar. For another, it might be a number they've been chasing for months. Both get the same cheer.

Work hard

PBs don't happen by accident. They're built on all the quiet sessions nobody posts about: the mornings you didn't fancy it but came anyway, the technique work, the light days and the reps you repeated until they felt right.

Squat day is when all of that pays off. Seeing members of every age and every level working side by side, each chasing their own best, is exactly why we do what we do.

Ring the bell

So why a bell? Because progress deserves to be heard.

When you hit a PB, you ring it. Everyone stops, everyone cheers, and for a moment the whole room is celebrating you. It's loud, it's a bit daft, and people love it. Most of all, it tells everyone in the class that hard work pays off and that their turn is coming too.

Stay for the chat

Our favourite moment of the day didn't involve a barbell at all.

Once the bars were racked and the bell had gone quiet, Martin and Carol sat down at the side of the gym for a catch-up. No rush to get out of the door, just two members having a natter after a hard session.

That's the bit that's hard to put in a photo. People come to CrossFit Warrington for the fitness, but they stay for the people. The friendships made between sets are a huge part of why members keep coming back, week after week, year after year.

Fitness. Friends. Community.

That's what a PB day looks like here. Pushing hard, working hard, cheering each other on, and then sticking around to chat.

If you've been wondering whether it's for you, the answer is probably yes. You don't need to be fit to start. You just need to come through the door, and we'll take care of the rest.
