Fitness is for Everyone: Why Scaling is the Heartbeat of CrossFit

By Sian Edwards, Owner

CrossFit class and scaling

If you’ve scrolled through our social media lately, you might have seen a reel of one of our classes in action. Maybe you caught someone inverted, floating smoothly through a handstand push-up, and thought: "Yeah, that looks incredible, but I could never do that."

We get it. When people picture CrossFit, they often imagine a highlight reel of elite gymnastics, heavy barbells, and intense pacing. It’s easy to look at those movements and feel completely put off, wondering if you need to be a seasoned athlete just to walk through our doors.

Spoiler alert: You don't. At CrossFit Warrington, we meet you exactly where you are. Whether you are stepping into a gym for the very first time, managing an injury, or navigating life post-stroke, our philosophy is simple: fitness should adapt to you, not the other way around.

The Core Philosophy: "Differ by Degree, Not Kind"

To understand why CrossFit works for literally anyone, you have to look at the foundational principle of the methodology: The needs of an Olympic athlete and our grandparents differ by degree, not kind.

An elite athlete training for the world stage and a retired grandparent living independently both need the exact same fundamental things from their bodies. They both need to be able to squat down and stand back up safely, lift things off the floor, push open heavy doors, and maintain balance and coordination.

The difference isn’t what they are doing; it’s how much and how fast. The Olympian might be squatting a heavy barbell or kicking up into a handstand push-up to build elite functional dominance. Your grandparent—or someone rebuilding their strength after a medical setback—might be squatting to a box and pressing light dumbbells to maintain functional independence and keep them out of a nursing home.

The movement patterns are universally human. The prescription is the same; the dose is just scaled to the individual.

The Magic of Scaling on Our Floor

Scaling is often misunderstood as a downgrade. In reality, it is an art form—and it’s the secret weapon that makes CrossFit the most inclusive, effective training methodology on the planet.

In a single class at CrossFit Warrington, you might see ten different versions of the exact same workout happening side-by-side. While one athlete is executing a strict handstand push-up against the wall, another might be performing a piked box push-up, and someone else is scaling with a seated dumbbell press. Everyone is working out together, sharing the same energy, cheering each other on—yet every single rep is meticulously tailored to the individual.

Gym owner and Level 2 Coach Sian Edwards explains why this personalised approach is built into the very DNA of our community:

"People often look at movements like handstand push-ups or heavy cleans and think CrossFit is exclusive. But our entire job as coaches is to strip away the intimidation factor. Scaling isn't about doing a 'lesser' workout—it’s about finding the precise stimulus that challenges your body safely and effectively on that specific day."

True Inclusivity: From Tots to 85-Year-Olds in Wheelchairs

True community means leaving no one behind. At CrossFit Warrington, our members span an incredible spectrum of life experiences, ages, and physical abilities.

Our doors are open to everyone—from energetic toddlers in our family classes to members well into their 80s, including individuals using wheelchairs or rebuilding their strength after experiencing a stroke. Sian and our coaching team specialise in adaptive fitness and special populations, pouring countless hours into customising workouts so that movement remains accessible, empowering, and life-changing for every single body that walks in.

"Fitness is a human right, not an exclusive club," Sian notes. "When you walk onto our floor, your background, your age, or your physical limitations don't matter. Whether you're an 85-year-old recovering from a stroke, a busy parent trying to find an hour for yourself, or an adaptive athlete looking to build independence, we will spend the time tailoring your workout. We meet you where you are, and we grow from there together."

Don't Let the Movements Scare You

If you've been sitting on the fence, watching our reels and wondering if you're "fit enough" to start, let this be your sign to take the leap.

You never have to worry about keeping up with anyone else. Our expert coaches spend the time propping up your workout, teaching you the foundational mechanics, and scaling every movement so it suits your body today—while building you up for tomorrow.
