Beyond the School Gates: Why Movement Matters
By Sian Edwards, Owner

Physical Education (PE) has long been a staple of the British school system, designed to introduce children to team sports, athletics, and fundamental movement. Yet, despite the best efforts of schools, PE lessons alone are facing increasing constraints. With growing academic pressures, tighter school timetables, and recent historical declines in total PE teaching hours across secondary schools, children are getting less dedicated movement time during the traditional school day than what is truly optimal for their growth.
According to the latest data from Sport England’s Active Lives Children and Young People Survey, less than half (around 47.8%) of children and young people in the UK are meeting the Chief Medical Officer's guidelines of taking part in 60+ minutes of sport and physical activity a day. Furthermore, roughly a third are classified as doing fewer than 30 minutes daily.
While schools provide a critical foundation, bridging this activity gap requires looking beyond the school gates and finding out-of-school programmes that make fitness both engaging, empowering, and rewarding right here in our local community.
Filling the Gap: Why CrossFit Kids & Juniors at CrossFit Warrington is Different
To counteract sedentary habits and build children up physically and mentally, structured extracurricular physical activity is vital. But why is CrossFit uniquely suited for growing bodies and minds?
Unlike traditional sports that often specialize too early or leave less-athletic children sitting on the bench, our CrossFit Kids & Juniors sessions at CrossFit Warrington focus on general physical preparedness. We use functional movements—pulling, pushing, running, climbing, lifting, and jumping—that safely mimic how children naturally play and move every day.
Why This Approach is So Transformational for Kids:
- No "Benchwarmers" Here: In our classes, everyone moves together. Every workout is universally scalable, meaning a complete beginner and a more active child can work out side-by-side, achieving the exact same stimulus and feeling the exact same sense of accomplishment.
- Injury Prevention & Longevity: By teaching proper mechanics, body awareness, and core stability early on, we bulletproof their joints and posture. This builds a robust physical foundation that protects them whether they are on the playground, playing school sports, or just carrying heavy schoolbags.
- Brain Power & Cognitive Growth: Complex movements require coordination and focus, which stimulates neurogenesis (the growth of new brain cells). Parents often notice improvements in their children's concentration levels, classroom focus, and ability to sit down and tackle homework after burning off physical energy.
- Building Real Resilience: CrossFit teaches kids that falling short on a movement isn't failure—it's just practice. Overcoming physical challenges in a safe, encouraging environment helps children develop grit, emotional regulation, and an unshakeable "I can do hard things" mindset.
- A Life-Long Positive Association with Fitness: We strip away the pressure of scoreboards and competitive stress, replacing it with high-fives, fun games, and community. Exercise becomes something they want to do for their mental health and well-being, rather than a chore.
What Our Community Says
We believe the true measure of our programme is found in the experiences of the local families who walk through our doors.
"We wanted something that wasn't just about winning a match, but about helping our child build strength, focus, and genuine self-belief. Seeing them look forward to Sunday mornings and come out smiling with a new group of friends has been incredible. It’s easily the best investment we’ve made in their routine." > — Matt Houghton, Parent
Behind every great programme is a passionate leadership team dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming space for every single child.
"Our mission with CrossFit Kids & Juniors has never been about turning children into elite athletes overnight. It’s about empowerment. We want every child—regardless of their starting point or athletic ability—to walk out of our doors at CrossFit Warrington standing a little taller, feeling more confident in their own skin, and discovering that movement can genuinely be fun." > — Sian Edwards, Owner of CrossFit Warrington
