5 Big Benefits of Working Out in the Cold
By Sian Edwards

Did we blink and suddenly winter arrived in Warrington?! One minute we were coaching in T-shirts, the next we’re scraping frost off the car and debating whether two pairs of socks is acceptable. The idea of heading out into the cold for a workout isn’t always appealing—especially when it’s dark, chilly, and your bed is warm!
But before you hit snooze on that early morning CrossFit class at CFW, it’s worth knowing that training in colder weather can actually boost your progress. Winter brings a stack of unique benefits that can genuinely elevate your fitness, your mood, and even your health.
So if you’re wrestling with your alarm clock, here’s why embracing the cold might be one of the best decisions you make this season.
1. Boosted Calorie Burn
When temperatures drop, your body has to work harder to maintain its core temperature. This increased effort means you naturally burn more calories than you would in warmer conditions. The cold can also activate brown fat—our body’s “good fat”—which uses energy to produce heat.
So, if body composition is one of your goals, winter sessions give you even more bang for your buck. That frosty morning might just be helping you more than you realise!
2. Enhanced Endurance
Colder temperatures can actually help you perform better. In warm weather, your body uses a lot of energy trying to cool you down. In the cold, that stress drops dramatically, meaning you can often move longer and more comfortably.
Members often find they can hold a steadier pace on ergs, run quicker loops, or maintain higher intensity on intervals when the gym or outdoor air is cooler. Winter PB, anyone?
3. Improved Mood and Mental Health
Cold-weather training is a brilliant antidote to the winter slump. With the shorter days, lower light levels, and increased time indoors, many people feel their mood dip—sometimes significantly. Getting outside or simply moving your body in natural light helps increase serotonin, boosts energy levels, and improves overall mood.
And of course, exercise releases endorphins—the “feel-good” hormones. So even if it’s dark or drizzly, that hour in the box can make your whole day feel brighter.
4. Stronger Immune System
Regular, moderate-intensity exercise during colder months can improve the efficiency of your immune system. Movement helps increase circulation, which in turn supports your body’s ability to detect and fight off illness.
At a time of year when everyone seems to be coughing or sneezing, staying active is one of the most effective ways to keep yourself fighting fit.
5. Increased Vitamin D Levels
Yes, the days are shorter—but the daylight is still precious! Getting outdoors, even briefly, helps your body maintain vitamin D levels, which support bone health, mood, and immune function. If you’re training outside for runs or warm-ups, you’re topping up a nutrient many people are lacking through winter.
Don’t Make This Common Winter Mistake
At CrossFit Warrington, we often take the chill off with overhead heaters, but we never turn the place into a sauna. And there’s a good reason for that.
Starting your session in a warm environment can give you a false sense of readiness. Your body might feel warm, but your joints, tendons, and muscles may still be cold and unprepared for the intensity of a CrossFit workout.
If you train at home or outdoors, make sure you:
- Warm up thoroughly
- Build gradually
- Prepare both body and mind for the movement patterns and load to come
We don’t skip warm-ups at CFW—and winter is exactly why!
Stay Safe When Training in the Cold
Working out in cooler conditions is hugely beneficial, but it does require a bit of extra care.
✔ Dress in layers:
Keep your core warm and protect your hands, feet, and ears.
✔ Warm up properly:
Give your muscles more time. Cold weather can also make your grip feel sluggish, so prep your hands if you’re lifting or using the rig.
✔ Stay hydrated:
You might not feel as thirsty, but you’re still losing fluids.
✔ Be aware of conditions:
If you’re running outside, especially early morning or evening, be mindful of icy patches or slippery pavements.
✔ Plan ahead for winter faff:
Allow yourself an extra few minutes before leaving the house—just in case you need to scrape the car windows! Nothing derails a morning session like discovering your windscreen is an ice cube when you’re already in a rush.
